Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco

Why was the Palace of Fine Arts built?

Originally built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific exhibition, this San Francisco landmark is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Designed by Architect Bernard R. Maybeck to resemble Roman and Greek ruins, the Palace of Fine Arts was originally never intended to be permanent but to be dismantled after the exhibition. Therefore, a majority of the original building did not last long except for the palace’s rotunda. Due to the building’s decay, it was renovated in the late 1960s’ to ensure that future generations would be able to appreciate the beauty for many years to come.

The Palace has had many uses over the past 100 years. It was used as a storage house during the World Wars, a science museum and nowadays as a theatre and location for special events and exhibitions.

Winchester Mystery House, San Jose

What is the Winchester Mystery House?

The Winchester Mystery House is a unique attraction located in San Jose, California. The house was once the residence of Sarah Winchester, widow of the famous gun manufacturer William Winchester whose guns were said to have “won the West”. The house is known not only for its size, but also for its eccentric architecture and mysterious history. Construction of the house began in 1886 and continued until Sarah’s death in 1922.

What is so unusual about the house?

Sarah Winchester was the only architect of the estimated 160 room mansion and she designed the house without any masterplan or blueprints. This lead to her issuing some very bizarre instructions to her construction crew which included staircases leading to nowhere, doors that open into walls, skylights in the floor and a door on the second floor that opens to a 12ft drop.

There are many rumours as to why she built this house in such an unusual fashion. One of the most bizarre theories is that Sarah Winchester was haunted by ghosts that were killed by Winchester rifles and that a medium supposedly told her that stopping the construction of the house would lead to her death. Legend says that the labyrinth of rooms was meant to confuse the ghosts and allow Sarah to escape them. However, some historians say that the construction was a tribute to her husband’s memory, that she loved architecture, or perhaps that she just had too much money to spend.

What is there to do at the house?

When you visit the Winchester Mystery house, you can explore 110 of the 160 rooms on one of the house’s guided tours including Sarah Winchester’s bedroom, the Séance room and the Grand Ballroom. On the tour you will learn more about the house and its owner and afterwards you will be able to judge for yourself whether the house is really haunted or not. On Halloween and every Friday the 13th, special after dark tours are offered.

Did you know?

The story of the house and Sarah Winchester inspired the 2018 horror movie Winchester starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke!
