One of the most iconic buildings in Arizona, the Mission San Xavier, has had a long history that begins long before Arizona became a part of the United States. In 1692, a missionary named Eusebio Francisco Kino established the Mission San Xavier on the Tohono O’odham tribal land. The European-style church that we see today was built between 1783 and 1797 and is known as the “White Dove of the Desert”.
What is there to do at Mission San Xavier del Bac?
Visitors are invited to tour the church or sit in on weekly Mass. You can also check out the church’s museum that features a 20-minute video telling visitors about the history of the Mission as well as artifacts that allow you to understand the way people lived in the Wild West. You can also see the well-preserved Catholic paintings and sculptures that show the huge influence that the Spanish had in the early 1700s.
