Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Opened in 1952, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is dubbed America’s “friendliest airport”. With over 40 million travelers passing through each year, Sky Harbor is the largest airport in Arizona and is located only a few miles from Downtown Phoenix. No matter what time you need to be at the airport, whether it’s 5 AM or 11 PM, there will be things for you to do here as the restaurants and bars are open 24 hours a day. Forgot to get souvenirs for friends and family? Sky Harbor has a wide variety of shops offering souvenirs, jewelry and sports attire.

You should also check out the Phoenix Airport Museum, one of the largest airport art museums in the United States, showcasing Arizona’s artistic and cultural heritage. Or, visit the Aviation History Collection and learn about the origins of aviation in Arizona. If you’re not interested in museums or simply want to chill out before your flight, Sky Harbor offers free unlimited Wi-Fi and a generous amount of power outlets to ensure that you don’t have to worry about your phone’s battery.

Fun Facts:

  • Phoenix is known for its extreme heat, but on a few rare occasions when temperatures reached over 119 degrees, it’s even too hot for planes to take off, grounding all flights.
  • Phoenix doesn’t have a terminal 1, only terminals 2, 3 and 4! That’s because the first terminal was knocked down to build a parking garage, and they never fixed the signs at the airport.
  • Sky Harbor is so dog friendly that they have a dog exercise area in the airport.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Los Angeles Airport

Opened in 1929, Los Angeles International Airport is the largest airport in California and the second busiest airport in the United States with millions of passengers passing through each year. LAX is a major international gateway to the United States, with over 1,300 flights departing to 44 countries each week. Due to the airport being so large, some regard LAX as a difficult airport to get around. Luckily, there are free airport shuttle busses that run between all terminals and parking lots.

The airport is only 15 miles away from the city of Los Angeles between Marina del Rey and Manhattan Beach, so if you have a long layover you can even think about chilling out on the beach! Or you check out the airport’s impressive number of shops, restaurants and bars within the nine terminals.

Fun Facts:

  • Did you know that LAX has an art program that features art exhibitions and installations throughout the airport?
  • LAX has an anxiety support program called “Pets Unstressing Passengers” (PUP) where passengers can visit and play with puppies. The aim of the program is to provide stress relief and comfort to passengers while they travel through LAX.
  • According to some travelers, the best place to be during stopovers is the food court in Bradley terminal because it has the best view, most food choices and the most comfortable seating.
